My day In Mcallen TX
We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day in McAllen, Texas. Actually, there wasn’t much luck about it because during the fall, winter and spring, temperatures are generally in the 70’s and 80’s with only a few days of rain a month. The McAllen Chamber of Commerce provided us with many great ideas of how to experience South Texas culture. Quinta Mazatlan allowed us to learn local history while also enjoying nature paths and incredible birding. The mansion was built in the Spanish Revival Style in 1935 and is one of the most massive adobe buildings in Texas. The City of McAllen purchased it in 1998 and opened it as an urban sanctuary in 2006.
The interior of the building has a short introductory film and many original furnishings. A highlight is a room dedicated to Folk Art which was donated by a resident. However, it is the extensive gardens and birding center that set Quinta Mazatlan apart from other historical homes. The garden has numerous walking trails that include markers describing the various flowering plants and trees. There are also sculptures of birds and animals. The small creeks and ponds attract many birds providing close up opportunities for photography. Even the gift store had unique items. Quinta Mazatlan is a great way to spend a day in Southern Texas.
